What I Learned from Eli

For the past year, I've had the pleasure and privilege of watching Eli grow into an amazing personality. In that time, I've learned many, many things from him. He's taught me that its possible to be completely fearless. He also taught me that a nuzzle and a purr will get you out of nearly any trouble.

Most of all, he taught me that if you just be yourself with no regrets , no worries, no self doubt, that unconditional love will be returned to you.

As is the case with so many beautiful things, Eli wasn't meant to have a long stay in this world. Last night, just one month from his first birthday, Eli was killed by a motorist in front of our house.

Remembering Eli

Eli, 2003-2004

I've dealt with a fair share of deaths in my family, pets or not, but this has been unusually tough. He was just such a special kitty. He would go for walks with us and the dog. He would jump from rooftop to rooftop down the street, following me to the car in the morning on my way to work. And he always talked. Loudly.

Eli was truly one of the most unique, and beautiful spirits I'm likely to come across in my lifetime. I'm just so sad that I wasn't able to share more time with him, but fate had other plans. He will be remembered, and deeply missed for a very long time.

Eli (2003-2004)

Update

Kat has written a nice eulogy on our family site, katandsean.com. She also had me put up a photo gallery of Eli.
