SEO and Web Standards
I'm dying to post a recent PowerPoint I put together at work showing the benefits of standards-based design for SEO. But in-light of recent happenings at Friendster, and my own caution towards posting anything that points to the company I work for, I can't show you.
To sum it up in a sentence, a website we built that hightlights certain products my company distributes for other suppliers is getting Google rankings ranging from #3-#7 when searching on the product's name or number. How's that for value-add service!
The power of good markup
All I did was apply clear, standards-based XHTML to the content. That's it. No keywords, no description, nothing. I had great copy to work from, and just marked it up semantically. I also made the top of the heirarchy available to Google's spiders so they could dig through the site easily.
Its a true testament to how standards design really does work. I just recently taught a class on standards design to others at my company and they were floored by the results I showed.
One of these days, I'll try and write up a case study (that'll have to be approved by legal) so I can show it. Until then, you know how to contact me.
